LURGASHALL (or LURGESHALL) is a village, 5 miles north-west from Petworth, in the Western division of the county, rape of Arundel, hundred of Rotherbridge, county court district of Petworth, diocese and archdeaconry of Chichester, rural deanery and union of Midhurst. The church (name unknown), an ancient structure, consists of nave, chancel, heavy tower, spire, and 3 bells, and has also a very ancient porch on the south side. The living is a rectory, commuted at £463 per annum, with residence, in the gift of Lord Leconfield, and held by the Rev. Septimus Fairles, B.A., of St. John's College, Cambridge. Here is a National school for boys and girls. The parish contains 4,850 acres, with a population in 1861 of 727.
