"Cresswell (Creswell), the family mansion and estate of the Rev Edward Whitby, MA, is extra-parochial, and situated near the river Sow, on the Eccleshall road, one and a half miles NW of Stafford. The estate contains 460 acres and 16 souls, and is a sinecure rectory valued at £20.[From History, Gazetteer and Directory of Staffordshire, William White, Sheffield, 1851]
The Hall is a large stuccoed mansion, on an eminence above the Sow, and about a quarter of a mile to the north-west are the ruins of an ancient chapel, or meeting house."
