Wednesbury St John

"St John's Church, in Bridge Street, was built in 1845-6, for a new ecclesiastical parish, comprising part of the town. It is a large and handsome structure, in the Early English style, consisting of a nave, aisles, and chancel, with a tower surmounted by a lofty spire. It was built by Mr Isaac Highway, of Walsall, to designs by Messrs Dankes & Hamilton, of London.
The benefice is a perpetual curacy, in the patronage of Lady E Foley, and incumbency of the Rev John Winter, MA."
[From History, Gazetteer and Directory of Staffordshire, William White, Sheffield, 1851]

Church History

St John's ecclesiastical parish was formed on 3rd June 1844. Services were initially held in a carpenters shop and then the People's Hall, before the church was built in 1845-6 and consecrated on 13th May 1846. The church, in Lower High Street, was a building of stone in the Early English style, and it consisted of a western chancel, clerestoried nave of six bays, aisles, north porch, and a south-eastern tower with spire containing one bell.
The church became disused in 1980 and was demolished in July 1985.
The living was a rectory, in the gift of the Bishop of Lichfield.
