"St John's Church, in Bridge Street, was built in 1845-6, for a new ecclesiastical parish, comprising part of the town. It is a large and handsome structure, in the Early English style, consisting of a nave, aisles, and chancel, with a tower surmounted by a lofty spire. It was built by Mr Isaac Highway, of Walsall, to designs by Messrs Dankes & Hamilton, of London.[From History, Gazetteer and Directory of Staffordshire, William White, Sheffield, 1851]
The benefice is a perpetual curacy, in the patronage of Lady E Foley, and incumbency of the Rev John Winter, MA."
