ASTON CANTLOW - Extract from National Gazetteer, 1868

[Description(s) from The National Gazetteer (1868)]
"ASTON CANTLOW, (or Aston Cantelupe), a parish and small town in the hundred of Barlichway, in the Stratford division of the county of Warwick, 4 miles N.E. from Alcester, and 6 miles to the N.W. of Stratford-on-Avon. The river Alne flows along the north-west border, and the Birmingham and Stratford canal passes on the eastern side of this parish. Comprised in it are the chapelry of Wilncott, the township of Newnham, and the hamlets of Little Alne and Pathlow.

The addition Cantelupe is taken from the name of William de Cantelupe, who owned the manor in the reign of King John, and who obtained from that prince a charter for a market and yearly fair to be held here, but which are now discontinued. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Worcester, of the value of £93, and in the patronage of the Rev. E. B. K. Fortescue. The church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist, and has a fine embattled tower at the west end. There is a school, built in 1848. In the neighbourhood are some stone quarries.

"LITTLE ALNE, a hamlet in the parish of Aston Cantlow, hundred of Barlichway, in the county of Warwick, 2 miles to the N.E. of Great Alne.

"PATHLOW, a village in the parish of Aston-Cantlow, county Warwick, 3 miles N.W. of Stratford-on-Avon."

"SHEFFIELD, a division of the parish of Aston Cantlow, county Warwick, 2 miles S.W. of Henley-in-Arden."
