* The late Mr. J. Hamerton Crump and Mr. Bellasis visited Lowther, 9 and
13 Aug., 1886. The Rev. T. B. Tylecote has, since then, kindly looked over
their work and added some inscriptions. "In this churchyard there is an
altar tomb with M.I. quite illegible, and many small and very old headstones
with no traces of M.I., especially in the S. E. angle of the churchyard
where there are no modern graves. All the tombstones are on the S. side of
the church, therefore the position of each has not been specified." Note by

(Altar tomb). Here lieth the Body of Richard Brown Who Dyed Jan. 1725
Aged 75 And Eliz. His Wife who dyed Sept. 21, 1730 aged 73. (3 brasses at
foot). 1. Interr'd near this place William, son of Richd. Brown of
Melkinthorpe. In life an Example of Honesty, Sincerity, Temperance and
Justice; Much esteem'd for his great Abilities and happy Success in Surgery;
He lived by all respected, And D. lamented by many Octr. 11th 1705 Aged 77
Y. To perpetuate his Virtues to Posterity this Remembrance is placed by his
sons-in-law, Jno. Bushby of Great Strickland and Jno. Wilkinson of Brinns.
Also Mary, Wife of Wm. Brown who d, Febr. 4th 1766 Aged 77 Y. And Elizth.
his eldest Da. who d. 18 May 1764 Aged 46 Y. 2. S. m. Joseph Bowness who
d. l. at Liverpool Novr. 10th aged 66 y. and was interred in St. Mary's
Cemetery, Kirkdale, November 12th 1874.

3. Beneath and near this stone lie the remains of William Bowness of
Melkinthorpe in this parish, Yeoman, and Sarah his Wife, He d. l. March 24th
1850 aged 79 y. She d. February 15th 1852 Aged 77 y. They had been united
for the long period of 50 y. and in full hopes of a blessed immortality d.
full of y. respected by all. In r. the kindest and best of parents and as a
tribute of gratitude and filial affection their youngest son John Bowness
caused this Tablet to be inscribed A.D. 1855. Here also lie interred Jane
and Sarah Bowness, Jane d. February 19th 1819 aged 4 y., Sarah d. November
30th 1842 aged 33 y.

Genl. in the Army, K.C.B, and Colonel of the lviii Regiment of Foot.
With a zeal and an ardour that distinguished him in his profession he first
sought employment in those countries where war was carried on; courage in
action, patience under privation, a promptitude to share every fatigue &
danger with his soldiers, ensured to him the love of all who were placed
under his command; to his friends he was endeared by his singular frankness
& simplicity of manner, his high sense of honor and affectionate
disposition. He was b. Novr. ii mdcclxxxi, Married Mary iiid Da. of Wm.
Earl of Lonsdale, and D. at Rome Feby x, mdcccxxviii after a long and
painful illness endured with characteristic firmness and Christian
resignation. Impressed with a grateful recollection of the happiness he had
enjoyed at Lowther he expressed a wish in his latter moments that his
remains might be deposited in this place: that he felt such a wish has
mingled with the higher consolations of his afflicted widow, the tender
assurance that the hours he passed here were among the happiest of his life,
and in love and affection to the memory of her departed husband, and in
pious hope that her infant son may hereby be incited to emulate the virtues
of his father she has erected this monument. Arms, 41y. 1 & 4 az. cross

Lowther Earl of Lonsdale eldest son of Sir William Lowther of Swillington
Baronet. He succeeded on the 20 June 1802 to the titles of Baron & Viscount
Lowther, on the 7 April 1807 he was created Earl of Lonsdale and in the same
y. a Knight of the Garter. When in House of Commons he represented the City
of Carlisle and the County of Rutland and he was to his decease Lord
Lieutenant of Cumberland and Westmorland. The elegance of his manners, the
goodness of his heart, the strength of his understanding, the integrity of
his character, his high sense of honor and the strict performance of the
various duties of the station to which it had pleased God to call him
obtained for him the affection of his family, the attachment of his friends,
and an extraordinary amount of public confidence and respect. He was the
ardent and zealous patron of men of genius and was the early and
confidential friend of William Pitt. He was b. on the 29 December 1757 and
d. 19 March 1844 full of honors as of years, leaving a name embalmed in the

YARKER, DILWORTH.
Here lie interr'd the remains of Robert Yarker of Lowther Park and Sarah
his Wife. He d. March 1st 1799 aged 70 y. and she d. l. March 3 1801 aged
72 and as they lived a series of years in a state of conjugal happiness,
they died lamented by their Relatives and esteemed universally by their
Neighbours and Acquaintances. Also near this place lie the Bodies of their
grand-children Laburn & Robert Yarker, sons of Henry & Elizabeth Yarker of
Lowther-park. Laburn d. May 19, 1797 Aged one m. and Robert d. l. April 10,
1798 Aged 6 y. Also Ann Dilworth the Da. of the abovenamed Robert and Sarah
Yarker who d. l. at Park House on the 30th day of August 1804 aged 39 y.
Elizabeth the wife of Henry Yarker of Park House who d. 17th of Sep. 1808
aged 44 y.
