An 1868 Gazetteer description of the following places in


BRADFORD ON AVON

"ATWORTH, (or Alford), a chapelry in the parish of Bradford on Avon, hundred and union of Bradford-on-Avon, in the county of Wilts, 3 miles N.W. from Melksham its post town, 3 S. of Corsham railway station, and 5 N.E. of Bradford. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Salisbury, of the value, with that of South Wraxall attached, of £250, in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Bristol. It is now a distinct parish for ecclesiastical purposes. The church is a neat modern structure, rebuilt in 1828. At a short distance to the north stands the ruined tower of the ancient church. The Independents have a chapel. There is a school with a small endowment, and some other charities. Lord Methuen is lord of the manor.

"GREAT ASHLEY, (and Little Ashley) villages in the parish of Bradford on Avon, near Bradford, in the county of Wilts. They are not far from the river Avon.

"HOLT, a chapelry in the parish and hundred of Bradford on Avon, county Wilts, 2½ miles N. of Trowbridge, its post town, 2 N.E. of Bradford, and 3 S.W. of Melksham. It has a station at Holt Junction, on the Devizes branch of the Wilts, Somerset, and Weymouth section of the Great Western railway. It is a small village situated on the river Avon, near the Kennet and Avon canal. " (There is more of this description).

"LEIGH, a tything in the parish of Bradford on Avon, hundred of Bradford, county Wilts, 2 miles N.E. of Bradford. It is joined to Woolley. The village is considerable."

"LIMPLEY-STOKE, a chapelry in the parish and hundred of Bradford on Avon, county Wilts, 3 miles W. of Bradford, its post town. It is a station on the Bathampton branch of the Wilts and Somerset railway. It is situated on the river Avon, and near the Kennet and Avon canal. It is joined with Winsley. The living is a perpetual curacy annexed to the vicarage* of Bradford-on-Avon, in the diocese of Sarum. The church is a small structure dedicated to St. Mary."

"SOUTH WRAXALL, a tything and chapelry in the parish of Bradford on Avon, county Wilts, 7 miles S.E. of Bath, 3 N. of Bradford, and 7 S. of North Wraxall. The chapelry includes the hamlets of Upper and Lower Wraxall, and has for many generations belonged to the Longs. The living is a curacy, consolidated with the neighbouring chapelry of Atworth, which together have recently been formed into a separate ecclesiastical district.

"STOKE LIMPLEY WITH WINSLEY, a chapelry in the parish of Bradford on Avon, hundred of Bradford, county Wilts, 3 miles S.W. of Bradford. The village is large. The chapel is dedicated to St. Mary."

"TROWLE, a tything in the parish and hundred of Bradford on Avon, county Wilts, near Bradford."

"WINSLEY, a chapelry in the parish and hundred of Bradford on Avon, county Wilts, 2 miles W. of Bradford on Avon."

"WOOLLEY, a tything in the parish of Bradford on Avon, county Wilts, 1 mile N.E. of Bradford. It is joined to Leigh."
