National Gazetteer (1868) - Heddington

"HEDDINGTON, a parish in the hundred of Calne, county Wilts, 3 miles S. of Calne, its post town, and 3 N. of Devizes. The village, which is small, is situated under Roundaway Hill. The inhabitants are principally employed in agriculture. The impropriate tithes have been commuted for a rent-charge of £53 10s., and the rectorial for one of £263 148. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Sarum, value £239. The church, dedicated to St. Andrew, is a stone edifice with a square pinnacled tower. It has an ancient copy of the "Book of Martyrs", presented in 1628. The parochial charities produce about £10 per annum. There is a parochial school for both sexes, and a chapel for the Wesleyans. Here is said to have been the site of the Roman station Verlucio, where coins, urns, &c., have been found. There is also a camp at Bagdon Hill."
