Tony Woodward in Canada has a full name index to the 1891 census for the whole of Wiltshire. He provides a free search service to provide information from the index, which includes full PRO references to the original census entries. Donations to help cover costs are welcome, but voluntary. He will provide full transcripts, at no extra charge unless the number is substantial. He has a name index to the 1871 census for 99% of the county, a name index to the 1861 census for a small part of the county, and has in progress an index to the 1841 census, for the North of the county.
All entries in the index contain:
Parish of birth is not normally included in the index, but if the place of birth was outside the UK it is available.
Coverage is the whole county - about 265,000 people completed November 2002.
He does the index lookup for free, although a small donation towards the cost of the microfiche would be welcomed.
The search service provided is as follows:
1. You may ask for an individual's forename and surname or for a surname search. If you can limit the search by giving a location within the county, the age of an individual, name(s) of spouse or parents etc., that would be helpful and will result in a much quicker reply. Blanket searches for a surname across the whole of Wiltshire go to the bottom of the priority list and may not receive a reply for a long time. Only two surnames at one time please - more than this may delay the reply.
2. If requesting a search by email you will receive a reply by email, usually in the form of an attached document.
3. Send your request as an email to tony.woodward@one-name.org
or as a letter to his snail mail address:
Mr A.S. WOODWARD, 35 West Ridge Drive, Stittsville, Ontario, K2S 1S4, Canada
(new address from January 2005).
If using regular mail, please enclose:
(within Canada) a stamped, addressed envelope;
(from elsewhere) a self-addressed envelope and 2 IRC's
(International Reply Coupons available at Post Offices).
A request by post MUST include one of the above or you will not
receive a reply.
Each index lookup includes a census reference enabling you to look up the original census entry for yourself. However, Tony will provide full transcripts for individuals or households at a reasonable charge. If requesting by regular mail, ask for a quotation at the same time - there is no obligation to take it further later.
For full transcriptions, be sure to indicate whether you want a quote for a) only people with the surname requested, b) the requested surname plus related people or c) the full household whether related or not. Although not all members of the household may have the same surname, some of them may be related. Even servants have been known to marry their employer later!
Institutions such as workhouses or hospitals are never sent in full, but for large households, where one of the requested people is a servant or a visitor, you will be given a quote for both the full household and just the individual so that you can decide.
We have a sample 1891 census transcript for Draycot Cerne and Tytherton Kellaways
Tony Woodward is also indexing the 1871 census for Wiltshire. Of the 265,000 population in 1871, he has in April 2004 a surname index or better for 99% and has full details for 46%. The parishes not covered at all are ones enumerated in Hampshire in 1871 - because they are on microfilm not microfiche. He is actively indexing the 1871 census, with coverage of full details particularly for North Wiltshire - complete except Marlborough.
Tony Woodward has started a name index to the 1861 census, the first person
in each household of a particular surname, but is doing very little further
indexing for 1861. This index includes the following parishes:
Alderton, Ashton Keynes, Avon, Blunsdon St. Andrew, Braydon, Bremhill,
Bremilham, Broad Blunsdon, Brokenborough, Castle Eaton, Chisledon (part),
Christian Malford, Clyffe Pypard, Cricklade St. Mary, Cricklade St. Sampson
(part), Crudwell, Dauntsey, Draycot Cerne, Easton Grey, Foxley, Garsdon,
Great Somerford, Hankerton, Highway, Highworth (part), Hilmarton, Kington
Langley, Kington St Michael, Lea & Cleverton, Little Somerford, Luckington,
Lydiard Millicent, Lydiard Tregoze, Lyneham, Malmesbury, Milbourne
(Malmesbury), Minety, Norton, Oaksey, Rodbourne Cheney, Seagry, Sevenhampton
(Highworth), Sherston Parva, Sopworth, South Marston, Stanton St Quintin,
Sutton Benger, Tockenham, Tytherton Kellaways, Westport St. Mary, Wootton
Bassett, Wroughton (part), Yatesbury. There are 40,000 people in this index.
Tony Woodward writes in April 2005:
I recently received Wiltshire 1841 from Archive CD Books and my 1841 efforts will very soon
outstrip 1861 so I thought they should be mentioned.
Up to now this census is not even mentioned on the Wiltshire census pages.
I now have 26,000 people of Wiltshire (10%) covered for 1841.
Parishes and locations covered so far:
Also in progress are - Calne (900 entries so far), Chippenham (1400), Malmesbury (800) and Swindon (350), and I mean to add surname access to Purton, Wootton Bassett and Highworth as soon as I can, anywhere in north Wilts with more than 2000 population. These are the places that are not so easy to look up as are the small villages - which anyone having the CDs can do in half an hour or so. Eventually I'll get to Marlborough, Ramsbury and so on, according to my policy of covering everything either north of or straddling the Bath Road. North of here is where all my own connections are and hence my diminished interest in the rest of the county.
