BORDESLEY, Worcestershire

"BORDESLEY, a hamlet in the parish of Tardebigg, and hundred of Halfshire, in the county of Worcester, 5 miles to the E. of Bromsgrove. The Redditch branch of the Bristol and Birmingham railway passes near this place. It was the site of a Cistercian abbey, founded by the Empress Maude, which was dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and had revenues amounting at the Dissolution to about £392. It was given by Henry VIII. to Andrews Lord Windsor, in exchange for the manor of Stanwell, which the king compelled him to part with. It is related that this nobleman, being ordered to quit Stanwell, his old family seat, without delay, left in the mansion the abundant provisions he had just made for a hospitable and merry Christmas, saying that they should not find it "bare Stanwell". There are no remains of the abbey. Near the village is Bordesley Park."
