NORTON BY LENCHWICK - Extract from National Gazetteer, 1868

[Description(s) from The National Gazetteer (1868)]
"NORTON BY LENCHWICK, a parish in the lower division of Blackenhurst hundred, county Worcester, 3 miles N. of Evesham, its railway station and post town. It is situated on the Alcester road, and contains the hamlets of Lenchwick and Chadbury. The village, which is small, is entirely agricultural. The impropriate tithes belong to the Dean and Chapter of Worcester. The living is a vicarage* with the vicarage of Lenchwick, or Lantchurch annexed, in the diocese of Worcester, joint value £157, in the patronage of the dean and chapter.

The parish church, dedicated to St. Egwin, is an ancient cruciform structure with a tower containing six bells. The interior of the church contains monuments to the Bigg family, also effigies of knights in armour, and ladies in court dresses of the 16th century. The church was partly rebuilt in 1844. The portion untouched is still in a ruined condition. The parochial charities produce about £2 per annum. There are ruins of an old stone bridge at Twyford which once crossed the river Avon."

"CHADBURY, a tything in the parish of Norton, lower division of the hundred of Blackonhurst, in the county of Worcester, 2 miles N. of Evesham, and 2 miles from Norton."
