"ASKHAM BRYAN, a parish in the Ainsty of the city of York{, in the East Riding of the county of York}, 4 miles to the W. of York, its post town. The North Midland railway passes near it. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of York, value £120, in the patronage of H. Croft, Esq. The church, part of which was built in the 11th century, is dedicated to St. Nicholas. There are charitable endowments amounting to £34, of which £10 is for the support of a free school. This village is a meet for the Ainsty hounds."
