The Ancient Parish of COTTINGHAM

"COTTINGHAM, a parish in the wapentake of Harthill; 6 miles NW. of Hull. This place is of considerable antiquity and ranks amongst the most pleasant, healthful, and populous villages, of the East Riding of Yorkshire. The population of the parish of Cottingham, amounts to 2,479." (There is further information for Cottingham).

"DUNSWELL, 2 public houses in the parish of Cottingham, and wapentake of Harthill; 2¾ miles NE. of Cottingham, 4½ miles NNW. of Hull."

"HULL BANK, a hamlet in the township and parish of Cottingham; (the seat of Benjamin Blades Haworth, Esq.) 3 miles from Hull."

"NEWLAND, in the parish of Cottingham, and wapentake of Harthill; 3 miles ESE. of Cottingham, 2 miles NNW. of Hull. Here is a Methodist chapel, and a school with a small endowment."

"RAYWELL, (the seat of Daniel Sykes, Esq.) in the township and parish of Cottingham; 3¼ miles WSW. of Cottingham, 8 miles from South-Cave, 6 from Beverley, 7 from Hull."

"SPRING HEAD, in the parish of Cottingham, and wapentake of Harthill; (the seat of Richard Tottie, Esq.); 2 miles S. of Cottingham, 3 miles WNW. of Hull. There is here an excellent spring of water, from which the town of Hull is supplied."
