The first list of Benefactions in St. Helen's Church, Escrick.


BENEFACTIONS
John Cooke of Wrayes House and Margaret his wife, gave in their life time unto the poor of Escrick £1.6. per ann: to be paid out of 10 acres of land in Skipwith Fields now in the occupation of William Tomlinson which after the decease of the said John Cooke and Margaret his wife, is to be paid into the hands of the churchwardens for the time being by two equal payments in the year viz. upon every Michaelmas and Lady Day to be distributed in bread upon every Lord's Day in the Church, to six poor people of Escrick that shall frequent divine service at the discretion of the minister and churchwardens for ever.

On the brass plaque at the bottom of the photo:

The Venerable James Palmes, Archdeacon of the East Riding, Rector of this Parish from 1808-1828 (?) having been presented with the sum of £100 on his resignation of the living gave the same to the Rector and Churchwardens for the benefit of the poor of Escrick and Deighton.
