The place:

A parish town, in the wapentake of Ouse and Derwent, Liberty of Howdenshire; 5½ miles from Selby, 7½ from Howden, 9½ from York. Population 315. The Church, a peculiar, is a vicarage, dedicated to St. Helen, in the deanery of Bulmer.
