Geographical and Historical information from the year 1868.

"WARTER, a parish in the Bainton-Beacon division of Harthill wapentake, East Riding county York, 4 miles N.E. of Pocklington, its post town. The village is situated near the Wolds, and the greater part of the land is under tillage. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of York, value £100. The church is dedicated to St. James. The Wesleyans have a chapel. An Austin priory was founded here by Geoffry Fitz-Pain in 1132, which at the Dissolution was valued at £143. Warter Priory is the principal residence."
