The List of Vicars in St. James's Church, Warter.
From certain facts it seems clear that the foundation of
the Church in Warter was earlier than the Norman
Conquest: most probably there was an Anglo-Saxon
Church which the Normansdid not destroy when
they laid all the district waste.
Warter - Church of St. James.
This Church with its Chapels, Tithes and six oxgangs
of land were given to ye priory of Warter by ye
founder - Galfrid Trusbutt, and afterwards being joined
to it: had an ancient Vicarage endowed therein, and in 1358,
John, Archbishop of York ordained that one of ye
Canons Regular of ye said Monastery of Warter,
presented by ye prior and convent, should be Vicar
thereof - Burton - Monasticon Ebor - Vol. II -
