The London Group meets four times a year, in March, June, September and November, when we aim to have distinguished speakers on a wide variety of subjects, many with a Yorkshire interest. The Group welcomes all members of the Yorkshire Family History Societies to which we are affiliated, particularly those members who are based in the south and are unable to attend meetings of the Yorkshire societies. Members of other family history societies and anyone with an interest in Yorkshire family history are also welcome as guests.
The Group is now an Associate Member of The Yorkshire Group of FHSs and a full Member of the Federation of FHSs.
Previous meetings have included topics such as: Yorkshire's battles and military traditions; Yorkshire Soldiers in the Public Record Office; LDS resources for Yorkshire family historians; Yorkshire sources at the Society of Genalogists; Irish Ancestors in Yorkshire; Tykes who stayed put(distinctive Yorkshire surnames); The Archives of the YAS; York Minster Archive.
The Group attend Who Do You Think You Are? Live at Olympia in London from 24 - 26 Feb 2012.
Our meetings are held at the Society of Genealogists, 14 Charterhouse Buildings, Goswell Road, London EC1. The doors open at 10 a.m. for meetings to begin promptly at 10:30 a.m., finishing by 12.30. Coffee and tea are available before meetings begin. There is a modest membership fee of two pounds, and a charge of two pounds per meeting attended to cover essential expenses. At each meeting there is a lecture, or series of short talks by members (e.g. Case Histories and Problem Solving).
The Family Record Centre, and the Guildhall Library are conveniently close to the Society of Genealogists for group members who want to continue family history research after the meeting has finished, but only SoG members have free use of the library after the meeting.
