APPLETON WISKE:
Geographical and Historical information from the year 1868.

"APPLETON WISKE, a parish, in the western division of the liberty of Langbaurgh, North Riding of the county of York, 6 miles to the N.E. of Northallerton. The river Wiske flows through it. The inhabitants are chiefly occupied in the linen manufacture. The living is a perpetual curacy annexed to the rectory of Great Smeaton, in the diocese of York."
