The Sand Hutton and Claxton Chronicle

JULY, 1926.

Editorial.

In our January number we expressed the hope that the Country would pass through a happy and prosperous year.

Unfortunately this hope has not been fulfilled, and although politics and political opinions have no place in our little journal, we feel that some reference should be made to the General Strike which occurred on May 3rd, if only as a record for the future.

We who live in the country are fortunate in leading peaceful lives, and although the General Strike did not materially affect us at the time, yet we shall have to pay in the long run for a quarrel which we would have thought might have been avoided. As it is, the Country's trade has been thrown back to an extent which only time will show-and this, too, just when there were signs of a trade recovery.

So far as we are concerned, it is only necessary to record that a large number of special constables were enrolled; there were numbers of volunteers available for all kinds of services, and the Fire Brigade, which it was feared might be needed, played the game and did all it was asked to do.

The members of the Sand Hutton Fire Brigade who were mobilised for Emergency duty during the Strike were as follows:

Chief Officer Major Sir R. J. Walker, Bt.FiremanJ. Snow.
Supt. G. Batty. ,,W. Swift.
Chief Engineer E. Grice, D.C.M. ,,J. Craggs.
2nd Engineer F. Wade. ,,F. Cook.
Engineer F. Odgers. ,,E. Pepper.
Engineer H. Thompson. ,,H. Richmond.
Foreman T. Evers. ,,G. Curtis.
Leading Fireman F. Evers. ,,NV. Fugill.
Leading Fireman G. Gill. ,,NV. Ashton.
Fireman C. Watson. ,,L. Dresser.

Reserve Staff-Ex. Supt. J. Folkard, Engineer R. Spaven.

In addition the following is a list of Special Constables whose services were available if required-those marked with an asterisk were Special Constables previously, and the others were enrolled for emergency duty during the Strike.

A note from Andy Kerridge:

The Walkers at Sand Hutton Hall did not just have their own fire brigade, they had a Cricket team, a Rifle Club, and a private railway (The Sand Hutton and Claxton Light Railway). There is a small booklet available about the railway, and if you know where to look, there are still signs of it (the odd bridge, and embankment).

Sand Hutton Hall was demolished a few years ago. I can remember it in a pretty ruinous state when I used to go to school in Sand Hutton (c1966-72).
