The place: BOWES.     Church dedication: ST. GILES.     Church type: Augmented perpetual Curacy.

Area, 19,780 acres. Gilling West wapentake. -Population, 1,148 *1; Church-room, no return ; Net value, £90. -The Church was given by John, the son of Asculf de Bohes, to St. Leonard's Hospital, in York, but no Vicarage was ever ordained therein.

Patron and impropriator, Rev. T. Harrison.

An Inclosure Act was passed 6th Geo. III.

There is no glebe house.

The Register Books commence in 1670; but many entries before 1700 cut out.

Charities:
George Deanham's gift, by will, 10th May 1688. Interest of £10.

Joseph Kipling's rent charge of £2 per annum.

Bachelor's Money -donor unknown. interest of £15 to two, or one of the oldest bachelors in the parish.

William Hutchinson's charity, by will, 13th September 1693. The hospital, which is atRomaldkirk, contains six alms-people, who have each £10 per annum. The school is free for all children of the parish of Bowes, and is conducted as a national school; Latin is taught if required. £20 per annum is paid towards Romaldkirk School. There is also an exhibition at Pembroke Hall, Cambridge, for a scholar from the school. Endowment ; 337a. 2r. 15p., let, at the time of the Report, for £260. 16s. per annum. -Vide 7th Report, page 615.
