Geographical and Historical information from the year 1868.

"COVERHAM, a parish, in the wapentake of West Hang, in the North Riding of the county of York, 2 miles S.W. of Middleham, and 4½ from Leyburn. It is situated on the river Cover, and contains the townships of Carlton, Carlton Highdale, Coverham-cum-Agglethorpe, East and West Scrafton, Caldbergh, and Melmerby. The parish is very extensive, comprising above 22,000 acres, part of which is moorland. Coal, limestone, and slate are worked. At the commencement, of the 13th century an abbey for White Friars was founded by Ralph FitzRobert; ruins of which still remain. At the Dissolution its lands were valued at £208. The living is a perpetual curacy* with the perpetual curacy of Horsehouse annexed, in the diocese of Ripon, value £180, in the patronage of the Tomlinson family. The church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, is a stone structure, with tower and handsome stained-glass windows. It has been recently restored. The charities amount to £45 per annum, exclusive of Constantine's endowment for a free school. Coverham Abbey, the seat of Thomas Lister, Esq., is formed from the outhouses of the ancient building"
