Geographical and Historical information from the year 1835.

"FORCETT, a parish in the western division of the wapentake of GILLING, North riding of the county of YORK, comprising the townships of Barforth, Carkin, Forcett, and Ovington, and containing 417 inhabitants, of which number, 86 are in the township of Fprcett, 7 miles N.E. from Richmond. The living is a perpetual, curacy, in the archdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of Chester, endowed with £400 royal bounty, and £1400 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Vicar of Gilling. The church, dedicated to St. Cuthbert, is a neat structure. There are remains of a Roman intrenchment in the parish."


"BARFORTH, a township in the parish of FORCETT, western division of the wapentake of GILLING, North riding of the county of YORK, 6 miles E. from Barnard- Castle, containing 141 inhabitants. Within this township, which is situated on the banks of the Tees, are the inconsiderable ruins of Old Richmond, a place formerly of some note, as is evident from the relics that are frequently dug up: the remains consist only of an old ruinous chapel, with some visible inequalities in the surface of the ground."


"CARKIN, a township in the parish of FORCETT, western division of the wapentake of GILLING, North riding of the county of YORK, 7 miles N.E. from Greta-Bridge, containing 24 inhabitants."


"OVINGTON, a township in the parish of FORCETT, western division of the wapentake of GILLING, North riding of the county of YORK, 4 miles E.N.E. from Greta-Bridge, containing 166 inhabitants. A priory of Gilbertine canons, subordinate to that of Sempringham, was founded here about the reign of John, by Alan de Wilton, which, at the dissolution, was valued at £11. 2. 8."
