Geographical and Historical information from the year 1868.
"FYLINGDALES, a parish in the liberty of Whitby Strand, North Riding county York, 5 miles S.E. of Whitby, its post town, and 12 N.W. of Scarborough. It is situated on the eastern coast, and includes the hamlets of Fylingthorpe, Parkgate, Normanby, Ramsdale, Robin Hood's Bay, and several other small places. Many of the people are employed in the fishing trade. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of York, value £120, in the patronage of the archbishop. The church is a stone edifice dedicated to St. Stephen. The parochial charities produce about £15 per annum. The Independents and Wesleyans have chapels at Robin Hood's Bay, and there is a National school for both sexes. George Cholmley, Esq., is lord of the manor."
