HAWNBY:
Geographical and Historical information from the year 1835.

"HAWNBY, a parish in the wapentake of BIRDFORTH, North riding of the county of YORK, comprising, the townships of Arden with Ardenside, Bilsdale-Westside, Dale-Town, and Hawnby, and containing 620 inhabitants, of which number, 286 are in the township of Hawnby, 6 miles N.W. from Helmsley. The living is a discharged rectory, in the archdeaconry of Cleveland, and diocese of York, rated in the king's books at 7. 18. 6. Lord George Cavendish was patron in 1823. The church is dedicated to All Saints. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists."


"ARDEN, a township, joint with Ardenside, in the parish of HAWNBY, wapentake of BIR.DFORTH, North riding of the county of YORK, 8 miles W.N.W. from Helmsley, containing, with Ardenside, 139 inhabitants. A small Benedictine nunnery was founded here about 1150, the revenue of which, at the dissolution, was 12. In 1757, John Smales and Gregory Elsley bequeathed 120. 5., directing the produce to be applied to the instruction of six poor boys."


"ARDENSIDE, a township, joint with Arden, in the parish of HAWNBY, wapentake of BIRDFORTH, North riding of the county of YORK, 10 miles N.E. from Thirsk. The population is returned with Arden."


"BILSDALE WESTSIDE, a township in the parish of HAWNBY, wapentake of BIRDFORTH, North riding of the county of YORK, 8 miles N.N.W. from Helmsley, containing 127 inhabitants. In 1757> John Smales and Gregory Elsley bequeathed 120. 5., directing the proceeds to be applied to teaching six poor boys of this township."


"DALE TOWN, a township in the parish of HAWNBY, wapentake of BIRDFORTH, North riding of the county of YORK, 9 miles E.N.E. from Thirsk, containing 68 inhabitants."
