Help and advice for LEAKE: Geographical and Historical information from the year 1835.

LEAKE: Geographical and Historical information from the year 1835.

"LEAKE, a parish comprising the townships of Borrowby, Crosby, Knayton with Brawith, Landmoth with Catto and Leak, in the wapentake of ALLERTONSHIRE, the chapelry of Nether-Silton, and the township of Gueldable, in the wapentake of BIRDFORTH, North riding of the county of YORK, and containing 1083 inhabitants, of which number, 11 are in the township of Leak, 6 miles N. from Thirsk. The living is a vicarage, in the peculiar jurisdiction and patronage of the Bishop of Durham, rated in the king's books at £16. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. There is a small sum for the instruction of poor children. Leak was once a large town, but was destroyed about the time of the Conquest: the church and a farm-house alone remain in the township."


"BORROWBY, a township in that part of the parish of LEAKE, which is in the wapentake of ALLERTONSHIRE, North riding of the county of YORK, 5 miles N. from Thirsk, containing 267 inhabitants. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. Some small sums have been left for the instruction of children."


"BRAWITH, a township, joint with Knayton, in that part of the parish of LEAKE, which is in the "wapentake of ALLERTONSHIRE, North riding of the county of YORK, 3 miles N.N.W. from Thirsk. The population is returned with Knayton."


"CATTO, a township, joint with Landmoth, in that part of the parish of LEAKE, which is in the wapentake of ALLERTONSHIRE, North riding of the county of YORK, 6 miles N. from Thirsk. The population is returned with Landmoth."


"CROSBY, a township in that part of the parish of LEAKE, which is in the wapentake of ALLERTONSHIRE, North riding of the county of YORK, 5 miles N.W. from Thirsk, containing 39 inhabitants."


"GUELDABLE, a township in that part of the parish of LEAKE, which is in the wapentake of BIRDFORTH, North riding of the county of YORK, containing 128 inhabitants."


"KNAYTON, a township, joint with Brawith, in that part of the parish of LEAKE, which is in the wapentake of ALLERTONSHIRE, North riding of the county of YORK, 4 miles N. from Thirsk, containing, with Brawith, 377 inhabitants. The Wesleyan Methodists have here.a place of worship. There is a small endowment for the instruction of children."


"LANDMOTH, a township, joint with Catto, in that part of the parish of LEAKE, which is in the wapentake of ALLERTONSHIRE, North riding of the county of YORK, 4 miles S.E. from North Allerton, containing 59 inhabitants."


"NETHER SILTON, a chapelry in that part of the parish of LEAKE, which is in the wapentake of BIRDWORTH, North riding of the county of YORK, 8 miles N.E. from Thirsk, containing 202 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, annexed to the vicarage of Leak, in the peculiar jurisdiction of the Bishop of Durham. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists."
