The place:

A parish in the wapentake of Hang West; 3 miles from Leyburn, 10 from Masham, Bedale, Reeth, and Richmond, 18 from Hawes, 15 from Kettlewell, 43 from York, and 232 from London. Population 880. The Church is a rectory dedicated to St. Mary. It is a deanery and a royal peculiar.
