The Ancient Parish of OSWALDKIRK

[Transcribed information from the early 1820s]

"OSWALDKIRK, a parish in the wapentake of Rydale; 3 miles S. of Helmsley (Oswaldkirk Hall, the residence of the Rev. Francis Simpson) . Here are the remains of a very ancient building, supposed to be a monastery, begun in the ninth century, but never completed, the establishment being removed to Old Byland. The church is an ancient edifice (see Churches for photograph), dedicated to St. Oswald, in the patronage of William Gray, Esq. Ther are some very ancient e pillars at the entrance door on the south, and within the church is on arch of Saxon architecture. The living is a rectory. Here is a school for eight poor children, endowed with £5. a year, by Mrs. Mary Thompson. Population, 388."
