THORNTON WATLASS:
Geographical and Historical information from the year 1835.

"THORNTON WATLASS, a parish in the eastern division of the wapentake of HANG, North riding of the county of YORK, comprising the townships of Usk upon Ure, Rookwith, Thirn, and Thornton-Watlass, and containing 432 inhabitants, of which number, 181 in the township of Thornton-Watlass, 2 miles S.W. from Bedale. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of Chester, rated m w king's books at £6. 10. 10., and in the patronage of Milbank, Esq. The church is dedicated to St. W. Eight poor children are instructed for £4 per annum, the gift of an ancestor of the Rev. Frederic Dodsworth D.D., in 1756."


"CLIFTON UPON URE, a township in the parish of THORNTON-WATLASS, eastern division of the wapentake of HANG, North riding of the county of YORK, 4 miles S.W. from Bedale, containing 50 inhabitants."


"ROOKWITH, a township in the parish of THORNTON-WATLASS, eastern division of the wapentake of HANG, North riding of the county of YORK, 4 miles W.S.W. from Bedale, containing 76 inhabitants."


"THIRN, a township in the parish of THORNTON WATLASS, eastern division of the wapentake of HANG North riding of the county of YORK, 4 miles W.S.W. from Bedale, containing 126 inhabitants."
