The place:

A parish in the east-division of Langbargh; 4 miles from Guisborough, 10½ from Stokesley and Stockton (Co. Durham), 54 from York. Population 405. The Church is a perpetual curacy, in the peculiar jurisdiction of the Dean of York, dedicated to St. Cuthbert, in the deanery of Cleveland.
