"ALMONDBURY, a parish in the West Riding of Yorkshire, where was formerly a chantry, stands near Huthersfield, in the road from Barnsley to Halifax, was a famous T. calleed Campodunum in the time of the Romans, and was a royal seat of the Saxon Kgs. Camden also calls it a royal T. and says it had a cathedral dedicated to St. Alban, from whom it was called Albanbury. It had a castle, which was confirmed to Hen. Lacy by K. Steph. the ruins of which, with its rampart, are yet to be seen on a neighbouring hill."
