The place:

A parish town in the east division and Liberty of Staincliffe; 4 miles from Gisburn, 5 from Colne (Lancs), 49 from York. Population 1,334. The Church, a lay peculiar, is a perpetual curacy, dedicated to St. Mary, in the deanery of Craven.
