The Church of St. John the Evangelist, Cullingworth

The Church of St. John the Evangelist, Cullingworth
The church was consecrated on Friday 29th April 1853. Before that date Cullingworth was in the parish of Bingley and did not have a church of its own. It was around 1845 that the decision was made to appoint a curate in charge, the Reverend Poyntz, who took his services in the Oddfellows Lodge Room, the only public room in the village. After a few months the Rev Poyntz was suceeded by Reverend Timothy Brayshaw, who also only lasted a very short time. In 1847 when Cullingworth became a parish in its own right the Reverend John Hollings Mitchell was appointed to the incumbency. In 1851 a piece of land was donated by Mr Francis Sharp Powell of Wigan and the church is said to have cost £2000 to build. In 1902 the church closed for a period to allow for extensive renovations to be carried out and re-opened in 1903 with a special service. From "St Johns the parish and its people" [by Terry Hanson]
