The place: EAST HADDLESEY.     Church dedication: CHAPEL.

Barkston Ash wapentake, L.D. -Population, vid. Birkin ; Chapel-room, 150; Net value, vid. Birkin. -The Chapel is unaugmented. Torre gives the particulars of the foundation of this Chapel, and the ordination made thereon by Walter Grey, 9th February 1312, who provided that if any burial should take place either in the Chapel or Chapelyard, then shall the Chapel be put under ecclesiastical interdict, ipso facto, until the bodies be taken up and buried at Birkin.

This town belonged anciently to the Bella Aquas, and from them descended to the Stapiltons of Carleton, and at last came to the Methams, knights.

36 Hen. III. Nicholas Stapilton obtained a charter of free warren in all his demesne lands of East and Middle Haddlesey.

In the Parliamentary Survey, vol. xviii. page 248, it is recommended to be made a parish Church, " and to have one-third part of the profits of the Rectory."

Here was also a Chantry, founded in . 1331, by John de Hathelesey, citizen of York. -Torre's MS. page 380.
