Geographical and Historical information from the year 1837.

"CAWOOD, is a parish in the Lower Division of the Wapentake of Barkston Ash, pleasantly seated on the banks of the Ouse, 5 miles N W y N of Selby and 10 miles S of York. It has 1173 inhabitants, a good ferry for carriages, &c, and is celebrated for the remains of a venerable castle, once the seat of the Archbishops, as will be seen in its history, in Vol. II. Its market, formerly held every Wednesday, is now obsolete, but it has two annual fairs, one for cattle, on May 12th and the other for line, on September 21st and 22nd."
