GRENOSIDE:
Grenoside Congregational Church History up to 1868.

Here is a school-room, used as a chapel, of old standing, and interesting, as it has been an object of contention between Churchmen and Dissenters for the ownership. Grenoside was the birth-place in 1716 of the Samuel Walker who founded the ironworks in the neighbourhood of Rotherham, who built Masbro' Chapel at his own expense, and whose son Joshua Walker erected Rotherham College. The Walker family left an endowment, which is still paid to the School-house of Grenoside. In 1833, the Rev. J. ROBERTSON was minister at Grenoside and Ecclesfield. He was a man of singular ability, but of extreme modesty. Previously there had been ministers at Grenoside acting also as schoolmasters. There is a house for the master's residence, and some land.
