The place: GARFORTH.     Church dedication: SAINT MARY.     Church type: Rectory in charge.

Area, 1,700 acres. Skyrack wapentake, L. D. -Population, 782 *2; Church-room, 200; Net value, £514. -This Church was given by Ilbert de Lacy to the Abbey of St. Mary's, whence that monastery had the patronage of it until the Dissolution: since then the Witham's have had the patronage, and it is now in the Rev. J. Whitaker.

There is a pension of £1. 10s. formerly payable to the Abbot of St. Mary's, and another of £1. 4s. to the Prior of Pontefract. Synodals, 2s., Procurations, 6s. 8d.

In Pope Nicholas's Taxation the Rectory of Garford is valued at £8. 13s. 4d., in the King's books at £8. 17s. 7d., and in the Parliamentary Survey, vol. xviii. page 328, at £50 per annum.

Torre gives a catalogue of the Rectors.

The glebe house is fit for residence.

The Register books commence in the year 1663.

There was an Act passed in the 50th Geo. III. for inclosing the township of Garforth.

A mortgage under Gilbert's Act of £1,200 will cease in 1844.

Charity:
The School, founded by deed, dated 7th July 1737, by Sir Edward Gascoigne, baronet, and the inhabitants, for instruction in English. There are five acres of land belonging to the school. No free scholars. -Vide 16th Report, page 436.
