Geographical and Historical information from the year 1750.

"ILKLEY, a parish in the West Riding of Yorkshire, on the E. side of Skipton, near Wheatley-Spaw, on the S. side of the r. Wharfe, opposite to Stubham, appears to be very ancient, by the engraved pillars of Roman work lying in its Ch.-yard; and an inscription dug up near the Ch. not very many years ago, shews it was rebuilt by the emperor Severus."

"STUBHAM LODGE, in the parish of Ilkley, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, is parted from Ilkley by the r. Wherfe. Here is the seat of the Middletons, descended from Sir Adam, who lived in the R. of Edw. I. and an old Roman altar, removed hither from Ilkley."
