The place: KIRK DEIGHTON.     Church dedication: ALL SAINTS.     Church type: Rectory in charge.

Area, 2,470 acres. Claro wapentake, U. D. -Population, 506 *1; Church-room, 500; Net value, £901. - The Church of Kirk Deighton is an ancient Rectory, belonging to the patronage of the Barons Trussbut, from whom it descended to the Rosses of Ingmanthorpe, and by them to the Manners, Earls of Rutland. The present patron is the Rev. Dr. Geldart.

In Pope Nicholas's taxation, the Church was valued at £20, which in the new taxation was reduced to £10. In the King's books it is valued at £15. 11s. 10d. Synodals and Procurations 11s. 6d. In the Parliamentary Survey, vol. xviii. page 163, it is valued at £100.

Mr. Hargrove, in his History of Knaresborough, describes the armorial shields, &c. in the Church; and Torre gives a catalogue of the Rectors.

The glebe house is fit for residence.

There was a Chapel at Ingmanthorpe dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin ; and Sir Robert Ross, by his will, proved 11th February 1392, directed his body to be buried there.

The Register Books commence in 1600.

Charities:
Rev. Abraham Thornton's charity, by will, dated in 1692.

The interest of £20 bequeathed for apprenticing poor boys.

Sir William Thornton, Bart. by will, in 1715, £200 for purchase of lands; the rents to be given to the poor. The estate consists of 24 acres of land and six cottages. The Archbishop of York and the Vicar of Kirk Deighton have power to regulate the distribution.

Sir Hugh Palliser's school, by will, 24th January 1791. Twenty free scholars, who are also clothed. Income, dividends of £1,000 south sea stock. -Vid. 3d Report, page 457.
