"RIPLEY, a small but ancient market town and township, a parish-town in the parish of its own name, and in the Wapentake of Claro, is situated on the river Nidd, 8 miles S. of Ripon, and 5 miles W.N.W. of Knaresbrough. It has only 270 inhabitants. The market is on Monday, and two fairs for cattle, horses, sheep &c. are held on Easter Monday, and Tuesday, and on the 25th August. The Post Office is at Mr. Thomas Fletcher's, where letters are received at 7, and despatched at 9 evening."
