ROTHWELL:
Geographical and Historical information from the year 1835.

"ROTHWELL, a parish in the lower division of the wapentake of AGBRIGG, West riding of the county of YORK, comprising the townships of Carlton, Lofthouse, Middleton, Outton, Rhodes-Green, Rothwell, Rothwell- Haigh, Thorp, and Woodlesford, and containing 6253 inhabitants, of which number, 2155 are in the township of Rothwell, 6 miles N.E. -&om Wakefield. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of York, rated in the king's books at £19. 12. 11. The Rev. R. H. Brandling was patron in 1804. The church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, is in the -later style of English architecture, and has lately received an addition of eight hundred and four sittings, of which six hundred and forty-four are free, the Incorporated Society for the enlargement of churches and chapels having granted £ 800 towards defraying the expense. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. This ancient parish derived its name from a well near the church, adjacent to which are the remains of a castle, or mansion-house. Here are manufactures of woollen cloth, stuff, and hair sieves, and there are extensive-coal mines in the neighbourhood."

"ROTHWELL HAIGH, a township in the parish of ROTHWELL, lower division of the wapentake of AGBRIGG, West riding of the county of YORK, 5 miles N. from Wakefield. The population is returned with the township of Rothwell."


"THORP, a township in the parish of ROTHWELL, lower division of the wapentake of AGBRIGG, West riding of the county of YORK, 4 miles N.W. from Wakefield, containing 80 inhabitants."


"WOODLESFORD, a township in the parish of ROTHWELL, lower division of the wapentake of AGBRiGG, West riding of the county of YORK, 6 miles N.N.E. from Wakefield, containing 590 inhabitants. Here are manufactures of paper and earthenware."
