The place:

A parish and market town, in the wapentake of Barkston Ash, a part in the Liberty of St. Peter; 8 miles from Snaith, 10 from Howden, 11 from Ferrybridge, 12½ from Tadcaster, 14 from Pontefract, 15 from York, 18 from Market Weighton, 20 from Leeds, 183 from London. Population 4,097. The Church, a peculiar of the Selby Court, is a vicarage, dedicated to St. Mary and St. Germain, in the deanery of the Ainsty.
