SHERBURN IN ELMET:
Geographical and Historical information from the year 1837.

"SHERBURN IN ELMET, is a parish in the Upper Division of Barkston Ash, and a small market town, with 1155 inhabitants, in the liberty of St Peter. It is situated near the Railway to Leeds and Selby, 13 miles from the former town, and 6 from the latter, 6 miles S of Tadcaster and 6 miles N of Ferrybridge. The market is held every Friday, for corn, &c, a fair for pedlary, &c, on September 25th and hirings for servants on the Friday fortnight before, and the Friday after Martinmas. The History of Sherburn and its large parish will be found in Vol. II. The Post Office is at Mr Joseph Spear's where letters are received at 7 morning, and despatched at 6 evening."
