Geographical and Historical information from the year 1835.
"SOUTH KIRKBY, a parish in the upper division of the wapentake of OSGOLDCROSS, West riding of the county of YORK, comprising the townships of North Elmsall, South Elmsall, South Kirkby, and Shelbrooke, and containing 1314 inhabitants, of which number, 633 are in the township of South Kirkby, 85 miles S. from Pontefract. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of York, rated in the king's books at £15. 10. 2. The Rev. James Allott was patron in 1813. The church is dedicated to All Saints."
"NORTH ELMSALL, a township in the parish of SOUTH-KIRKBY, upper division of the wapentake of OSGOLDCROSS, West riding of the county of YORK, 6 miles S.E. from Pontefract, containing 113 inhabitants."
"SKELBROOKE, a chapelry in the parish of SOUTH-KIRKBY, upper division of the wapentake of OSGOLDCROSS, West riding of the county of YORK, 7?% miles N.N.W. from Doncaster, containing 115 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of York, endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £600 royal bounty. Sir R. Perryn, Knt. was patron in 1800. The chapel is dedicated to St. Michael. The ancient Forest of Barnsdale, part of which is comprised in this parish, is said to have been one of the haunts of the famous Robin Hood, whose name is given to a well not far distant. It is further remarkable for the meeting which took place, in 154], between Henry VIII. and the clergy of York, headed by the archbishop, who on their knees presented the king with £600."
