SPOFFORTH:
Geographical and Historical information from the year 1837.

"SPOFFORTH, a parish in the wapentake of Claro."


"WETHERBY, is a small market town, and a township in the parish of Spofforth, and in the upper division of Claro Wapentake, seated on the north bank of the river Wharf, 15 miles W by S of York; 16 miles N N E of Leeds; 7 miles S E by S of Knaresborough; and 192 miles N N W of London. It contains 1321 inhabitants, and has a market every Thursday, for corn, &c. and a cattle fair once a fortnight; also annual fairs on Holy Thursday, Aug 5th, Oct. 10th, and Thursday before the 22nd of Nov. Its History will be found with Spofforth parish in Vol II."
