- The John Knowles Memorial Free Church of England was built
following the placing of a brass cross and candlesticks on the Altar at
St Peters (Hoyland ) by the new Vicar, Rev. Charles William Bennet......
a present from the parishioners of his previous church.
This was considered by the parishioners of St Andrews, then the
Chapel of ease(?) to be a sign of PAPIST leanings and one, Mrs.
Elizabeth Bartlett, was so outraged that she had the JKMC built at her
expense....naming it after her brother who died in 1899 aged 52.
