The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Magheracloone contained the following places:

"MAGHERACLOONE, a parish in the barony of Farney, county Monaghan, province of Ulster, Ireland, 2 miles S.W. of Carrickmacross. Kingscourt is its post town. The parish is 7 miles long, and its greatest breadth is 3 miles. The surface consists for the most part of good soil. The chief waters of the district are Loughs Fea, Rahans, and Ballyhoe, and the river Lagan. The interior is traversed by the road from Carrickmacross to Kingscourt. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Clogher, value £382, in the patronage of the bishop. The church was built by means of a loan from the late Board of First Fruits in 1825. Here are two Roman Catholic chapels, and near a score of day schools. Loughfea Castle is the chief seat.
