The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Bumlin contained the following places:

"BUMLIN, a parish in the barony and county of Roscommon, province of Connaught, Ireland, 12 miles to the N.E. of Roscommon. It is situated near the Slievebawn mountains, and contains much limestone and bog. It includes part of the town of Strokestown. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Kilmore, Ardagh, and Elphin, of the annual value with those of Kiltrustan and Lissonuffy united, of £481, in the patronage of the bishop."

"STROKESTOWN, a post and market town in the parish of Bumlin, in the barony and county of Roscommon, province of Connaught, Ireland, 12 miles N.E. of Roscommon, and 94 from Dublin. It is situated on the road from Dublin to Ballina, and consists of two main streets crossing each other. It contains the parish church, a Roman Catholic chapel, dispensary, bridewell, sessions-house, police office, and union poorhouse. The town is a possession of Lord Hartland, formerly of Strokestown House, near the town. A brisk general trade is carried on, and there are two good inns in the town. Tuesday is market day. Fairs are held on the first Tuesdays in May, June, October, and November."
