"BRAWNY BARONY, one of the 12 baronies or subdivisions of the county of Westmeath, in the province of Leinster, Ireland, situated in the south-western part of the county, and bounded on the N. by Lough Ree, on the N.E. by the barony of Kilkenny West, on the S.E. by the barony of Clonlonan, and on the W. by the river Shannon. It contains the parish of St. Mary's, which includes part of the market town of Athlone. The area of the barony, which was the ancient seat of the O'Briens, is about 11,450 acres."

"CLONLONAN, a barony in the county of Westmeath, province of Leinster, Ireland. It is bounded on the N., E., and S. by the baronies of Kilkenny-West, Moycashel, and King's County respectively, and on the W. by the Shannon. It contains the parishes of Kilcleagh and Ballyloughloe, and parts of Kilmanaghan and Kilcumreragh. It extends 6½ miles in length by a breadth in some parts of 5 miles, embracing an area of nearly 32,118 acres. In the vicinity of the river the surface is somewhat marshy, but its general character is pleasing and well cultivated."

"CORKAREE, a barony in the county of Westmeath, province of Leinster, Ireland. Fore forms its northern boundary, Moyashel and Magheradernan its eastern and southern, and Moygoish its western. It is 8 miles long by about 7 wide, and has an area of 26,960 acres. It contains the parishes of Leny, Lackan, Multyfarnham, Portnashangan, Portloman, Stonehall, Tyfarnham, Taghmon, and the villages of Ballinalack, Multyfarnham, and Bunbrusa. The surface is diversified with upland and water, being broken by the Loughs Dereveragh, Iron, and Owhel, and the river Inny."

"DELVIN, a barony in the county of Westmeath, province of Leinster, Ireland. It is bounded by the county of Meath on the N.E., by the baronies of Farvill Magheraternon and Moyashel on the S., and by that of Demifore on the W. It contains the parishes of Clonarney, Castletowndelvin, Kilcumny, Killough, Killulagh, Killiveilaght, with part of Killucan, comprising about 39,062 acres; also the towns and villages of Castletowndelvin, Drumeree, and Clonmellon. The surface is hilly, with a large proportion of bog. It is drained in the S.E. district, by rivulets tributary to the Boyne."

"FARBILL, a barony in the county Westmeath, province of Leinster, Ireland. The barony of Delvin bounds it on the N., county of Meath on the E., the barony of Fartullagh on the S., and that of Moyashael and Magheradernon on the W. Its area is 35,453 acres of flat boggy land, with the river Boyne's affluents effecting its drainage to the E. It contains part of the parish and the village of Killucan, and the town of Kinnegad."

"FARTULLAGH, a barony in the county of Westmeath, province of Leinster, Ireland. It has Moycashel and Magheradernon bounding it on the N. and W., county Meath on the E., and Moycashel on the S. Its area is 39,340 acres. The surface is tame in character. It is drained eastward into the Boyne, and westward into the Shannon. The Royal canal passes through the northern portion. It includes the parishes of Castlelost, Carrick, Clonfad, Enniscoffey, Kilbride, Pass of Kilbride, Lynn, and Moylisker, and parts of Newtown and Mullingar. Lough Ennel is the principal lake."

"FORE, (or Demifore), a barony in the county of Westmeath, province of Leinster, Ireland. The county of Cavan forms its N. boundary, that of Delvin its E., those of Magheradernon, Moyashell, and Corkaree its S., and the county of Longford its W. Its length is nearly 12 miles, its greatest breadth 7, and its area is 52,582 acres. It contains the parishes of Foyran, Faughalstown, Lickblea, Kilpatrick, Mayne, Rathgarve, St. Mary's, and St. Feighin, besides the town of Castlepollard, and the villages of Coole, Tore, and Finea. It also includes loughs Sheelin, Keinail, Dereveragh, Bawn, and Lane, with several small streams and minor loughs.

"KILKENNY WEST, a barony in county Westmeath, province of Leinster, Ireland. Its boundaries are county Longford on the N., the barony of Rathconrath on the E., the baronies of Clonlonan and Brawney on the S., and Lough Ree on the W. It is 7 miles long by 5½ broad. The surface is generally well adapted to cultivation. This barony contains the parishes of Bunowen, Drumraney, West Kilkenny, and part of Noughaval. It is the ancient Machaire Cwirckny.

It is bounded by the baronies of Fore, Delvin, Farbill, Fartullagh, Moycashel, Rathconrath, and Cookaree. Its area is 42,845 acres, and it contains the parish of Rathconnell and parts of Dysart and Mullingar."

This barony comprises the ancient district of Kinelfiachia."

"DEREVERAGH, a lough in the county of Westmeath, province of Leinster, Ireland, 2 miles S. of Castle Pollard; the barony of Moygoish borders it on the W., and that of Corkaree on the S."
