Fife names: Ferguson, Thomson - e840082@pophost.anu.edu.au

xxx thanks for your message re my Fife surname submissions (Christina Ferguson/ James Thomson). Yes, they were married to each other - but I don't have a marriage date (except that it was probably before 1852) or a birth date for either of them. however, family tradition has it that they were both born and were married in Newburgh, Fife. Christina Ferguson would have been born ca. 1829 -- I know the following: - - they were in Swansea, Wales by 1853 - children: James, William Ferguson, Ann Christina, Isabella and Katie - - Christina Ferguson d. 18 February 1899 at Swansea, Wales - James Thomson d. 25 April 1888 at Swansea, Wales (but they do not seem to appear on burial records in Swansea). he wrote in one of his letters that he left home at an early age - but in the 1880s they made several return trips to Newburgh. his letters also suggest that he had a sister Jessie Wilkinson, mother of Christina Dron(?) and (by 2nd marriage) Agnes Wilkinson, Jessie died in Scotland 1886, aged 48 - - other members of the family (on either the Ferguson or Thomson side - I'm not sure which) appear to have included a nephew Tom Ross, who was killed at the Falls of Clyde leaving wife and 2 children, and sisters Mrs. Beveridge; Mrs. (Annie Thomson) William Byars (son John Byars) and Mrs. Kitty Duncan. - - that is as far as I have been able to get and I seem to have hit a brick wall. Nothing on IGI that appears to fit this family. If you can suggest any possible sources I might turn to I would be tremendously grateful. xxxx

155 doneINGLIS It has been said: "three strong working men named Inglis from England or Ireland emerged out of the mists of time" at Carslogie March, near Cupar, in 1580. However the oldest named Inglis I have is Robert Inglis, miller at Russell Mill, Springfield, and proprietor of part of Bondfield, Cupar. His dates are 1609-1690. I have no record of his wife's name and I have only the direct descendency from him through the next two generations - then more detail from 1712 onwards. All this (and details of his mother's family, the McClellands, Broadfoots and Hannays of Galloway and Wigtownshire) was put down on paper by Edinburgher Charles Simson Inglis in about 1850/60. There are also some of Charles' journal in the National Library of Scotland. Any further information? Evelyn Inglis - Peebles Scotland - 10-Oct-00

Dear Hugh: With some extraordinary good luck researching, plus information on a parallel line from some folks in NZ, I have discovered that Margaret Reekie married my GGGGrandfather Alexander Weir on 4 Jan 1833 in Dysart, Fife. - Any connections?

My primary goal is still to discover contemporary cousins more than uncover the past, although that is very interesting.

Louise Jupp" <swaffer@loujupp.freeserve.co.uk> "query4" <h.reekie@ieee.org> 12 Feb 2001

Hugh, came across the site while looking for Fife Family History info. I am researching my scottish ancestry in Dunfermline and Edinburgh.

My grandfather, Thomas Pitcairn Walker was born in Edinburgh in 1914. His Maternal grandfather was Andrew Walker born 1860 in Edinburgh, 4th child of 10 to Robert Walker & Sarah Wood both born 1833 Edinburgh. Andrew Walker married Agnes Pitcairn, born 1871 in Dunfermline, 2nd child of 2 to Thomas Pitcairn and Eliza Marshall. Thomas & Eliza are thought to have run a pub in Reform Street Dunfermline (now part of Carnegie Drive) but I have no other information about the families except that Thomas died in 1873 and at some stage Eliza and the two young children moved to Edinburgh.

My grandfather knows that there is a ruined house near Leslie known as Pitcairn House, and also that the Pitcairn islands were named after Captain Robert Pitcairn who first spotted them from the crow's nest. Naturally he wants me to trace the family back to these two romantic places - he is 86 and feels he is running out of time to find the answers!!

So, my query is how, from the south of England, do I go about finding who was running Dunfermline pubs in the 1860s/70s?

I will be at the London FRC next Tuesday where I can check census data and access a certain amount of the birth death & marriage records for Scotland, but I think it is about time I contacted folks in Fife who may be able to guide me more directly.

yours hopefully Louise Jupp

Hi Hugh

I am sorry about the 2 email addresses - this one is the cable connection but my son uses it more than I do (and doesn't read emails :-). The other address is the one that I use daily & I read emails!

I do not know when (or where) Isabel YOUNG & George JAMIESON married. though the children's birthdates do indicate around 1814. I suspect that George may be the son of Alexander JAMIESON & Jean (Eupheam?) HYND who had many children (though no George that I have found) in Newburgh, Fife with several also christened in Auchermuchty but I have no proof yet. George's brother, William JAMIESON, was my ggg grandfather & he married in 1810 in Brechin, Angus but I cannot find out where he was born & hence my hope that I can track him through George. The naming pattern for the families of William & George do imply that their father was an Alexander. The JAMIESON family probably came to Fife via Alyth, Perth & may originate in Moray.

My unfinished family tree back to the William JAMIESON above (but I have not added George's family yet) is at http://irwin.net.nz I live in Wellington,NZ. I have not submitted to the Fife list previously as I have only just found this connection via the will of my William's unmarried daughter Christina JAMIESON who left money to her cousins - three members of this family - namely Henry Gardiner, Mary and Jane JAMIESON.
