188 +++- MCKENZIE STALKER, Daniel was born November 28, 1823 near Grantown, Strathspey, Cromdale Parish, Inverness. He came a coachman in Dollar, Clackmannan in the early 1840's and married Catherine Stalker b April 15, 1827 in Newburgh, Fife, to Master Mariner Peter Stalker and Margaret Tosh. Daniel and Catherine were married November 11, 1848. They went to Limekilns, Fife and had son Peter Stalker Mckenzie on September 11, 1849. After a stay in Leith heand his family to Georgetown, Onerio, Canada, where John Stalker McKenzie (Sept 18, 1856) and Duncan Stalker Mckenzie (September 16, 1858) were born. From here they went to Detroit, Michigan, USA and had daughter Catherine Stalker McKenzie on March 13, 1863. They then went to Grand Chain, Pulaski, Illinois and had twins Daniel and William on Dec. 5, 1868. The family moved to Reno County, Kansas where after Daniel's death in 1884 his wife Catherine remarried a Dougal McArthur; after his death she went with her children to Elmira, Idaho and married a William Scott. The family then went to and fro from Seattle, Washington to Idaho. The brother William had children in Scotland: Margaret (Maggie) b 1854 md a Shortliff; Janet b 1856 (md Charles Gilmore). The oldest daughter remained in Put-In-Bay, Ottowa County, Ohio; the second lived near Sarnia, Lambton County, Canada. There was a son called Willie. Have searched to find the McKenzie parents of Daniel and William and if there were more siblings. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Richelle Buckles -5-Jan-2002

Thank you so very much for your help. I live in Meeker, Colorado, USA. Pretty cold and snowy here. Long way from Scotland but, have strong family feelings for it. Someday I wish to come "home" to see where my ancestors came from. I have been researching them for about 13 years now and that darn ole Daniel Mckenzie keeps me running in circles. My grandfather McKenzie used to say that the "McKenzies'" are seeing if I have what it takes. Oh yeh. Anyway, thank you again and your sight is very nice. Richelle Buckles

Me again, thought I would add that my Stalkers' are not so difficult. Have been trying to find Mariner records for the Newburgh, Fife area. My Catherine that married the Mckenzie, lived there and her father was Master Mariner Peter Stalker. I know he was good friends with the Giffords who were also Mariners there. Thank you again, Richelle Buckles

189 xx - BEATON - I am interested to establish the pedigree of the Beatons of Creich in 16th Century. I am researching Mary Beaton, one of the 4 Maries b. abt 1540 d of David beaton of Creich, but do not know her mother. David Beaton may be the sister of Elizabeth Bethune mistress of James V, King of Scotland and mother of Lady Jean Stewart, who m. Alexander Campbel, 5th Earl of Argyll in c. 1553. I am interested to establish any relationship to David Beaton, Cardinal Archbishop of St. Andrews, and Lord Chancellor assassinated at St. Andrews 1546. Robert Stedall Dunsfold , Surrey,UK

===191 - BEATON - The Beaton family (Bethune, Beton) were a well connected family at the time of Mary Queen of Scots. I have a putative family tree that I have put together from all sorts of sources but have not found a published pedigree. I am aware of a number of names:

James Beaton b 1473 d 1539 at St Andrews Bishop of Galloway 1504, Archb. of Glasgow 1509, Archb. of St. Andrews 1522, Lord Treasurer 1515. I believe that he was the s. of John Beaton, 5th Laird of Balfour b. 1440 d. 1507 Keeper of Falkland Palace and Marjory Boswell, his wife. John Beaton may be the yr. s. of John Beaton b. 1415 Holkettle d 1499 Balfour and Catherine Sterling b. Abt 1418.

David Beaton b 1494 d. 1546 assassinated at St. Andrews, Cardinal Archbishop of St. Andrews and nephew of James above. I think he was the s. of John Beaton of Balfour b. abt. 1465 (br. Of James above) and Elizabeth or Isabel Moneypenny. The cardinal had a mistress, Marion (or Mariota) Ogilvy d. of 1st Lord Ogilvy of Airlie by whom they had a no. of illegitimate children incl. Margaret b. abt. 1530 m. David Lindsay 10th Earl of Crawford b. 1527 d. 1574

James Beaton b 1517 d 1603 Paris, Archbishop of Glasgow, Mary Q os S's ambassador and confidante in France. He was the s. of John Beaton of Auchtermuchty b. abt 1490 eldest bro. of David above. I have not identified his wife.

Elizabeth Bethune b Abt 1518 mistress of James V 1513/42 mother of Jean Stewart b abt 1538 d 1588 m. 1553 Archibald Campbell 5th Earl of Argyll b. 1530 d. 1573, div. 1573 I believe that Elizabeth is the d. of Sir David John Beaton of Creich b 1495 Keeper of Falkirk Palace m. Janet Hay b 1499 (I do not know her antecedants). Sir David is the s. of Sir David Beaton 1st Laird of Creich b. abt 1456 Lord High Treasurer of Scotland. He m. Janet Duddington d, aft 1541. This Sir David is the s. of Robert Beaton b. 1433 and Mariot Lindsay b. 1433 d bef 1468. He is probably the elder bro. of John Beaton, 5th laird of Balfour b.1540 (see first name above)

Janet Beaton b. 1519 d. 1569 (probably sister of Elizabeth above) m (1)1540 Simon Preston of Craigmillar b. 1514, m (2) abt 1542 James Crichton b.1515, m bef. 1544(3) Walter Scott of Buccleuch b Abt 1495 d 1552 killed in Edinburgh St. by Kerrs (ancestors of Dukes of Buccleuch)

Sir David Beaton of Creich b Abt 1519 Keeper of Falkland Palace (who did he marry?) He appears to be bro. of Elizabeth and Janet. He seems to have 3 children:

Mary Beaton b. abt 1540 b. bef 1594 one of the four Maries that accompanied Mary Q of S to France as a child, m Alexander Ogilvy of Boyne m. 1565

David Beaton b. abt 1543 Master of Mary Q of S's household while imprisoned in England (who did he marry?)

Andrew Beaton, bro. of David, who was also in Mary Q of S's household, and sought to m. Mary Seton, another of the four Maries, but was drowned returning from France after seeking a dispensation for her vow of celibacy in c 1580

I have some doubts about the links in some of this data. Is there a pedigree that I have not found?

--196 - PINKERTON - My gg grandfather Benjamin Pinkerton b. 1816 Edinburgh. Married Jane Anderson, on June 6, 1845. Children from this marriage: Benjamin (1845)and Janet (b 1849) Benjamin (1845)married Jessie Smart on June 11, 1874. Children from this marriage: David, Margaret, Benjamin. I am looking for information on David, as I have none. Maraget married a fellow with the surname Macmillan. Their children grew up in Kirkcaldy. I am really hoping I can find them. Benjamin came to Canada, and I am his great grandaughter.

My grandfather Benjamin settled in a town called Herscel, Saskatchewan, in Canada. He died December 17, 1972, in Vancouver, British Columbia. I have found that his siter had two sons; David, a physician in Kirkcaldy, who has since passed, and either Allan or Archie, a lawyer, in Scotland. I am not sure if he is still alive. Their last name would have been MacMillan. As for grandpa's brother David Pinkerton, I onlt know of his name and that he was born approximatly 1875, in Kirknewton and Calder. Regarding the Longstaffe contact, I sent a letter to the Florida address as you suggested, but only a day or so later, I came across Jonni Longstaffe making a query on another message board. So I e-mailed and got a reply.

She, (not a he, as I had expected) has had a change of circumstances and therefore has a new e-mail address. She has asked me to pass it on to you so that you can update your site. Her new e-mail is:

To: format-page-lower <h.reekie@ieee.org>

Dear Mr Reekie - I am unsure as to how I should get myself on the list of surname researchers.

Please check me out at www.wishart.org. My name is Jack Wishart and I have been collecting Wisharts (now 15000) since 1974 from Scotland and all the usual Commonwealth countries.

Anyone who has a Wishart name or ancestor should access the wishart.org site and use the forms to tabulate what they know and send them to me. I add to my database whatever is new and in return send out all that connects.

I would be pleased to hear from you as to how I should proceed to get listed.
I am a member of the GOONS, the Society of Genealogists and the Scottish Genealogical Society.
I live in the middle of Fife. I look forward to hearing from you. J G Wishart

==192 - WALKER The following information was found, in 1952, by my grandfather. I believe that the James, baptised June 6th, 1756 is my ancestor. Any further information on this family would be of great interest.

If this connection is correct , I have much data on the descendants of James Walker in America.

Report on the Ancestry of James Walker Saline, Fife. The Old Parochial Registers of Saline Fife were examined between 1746, when the records of Saline begain, to 1783. The following entries were found.

June 6th, 1756. Alexander Walker and Christian Henderson in Craighouse had their child Baptized, called James.

Further children recorded in the Old Parochial Register of Saline to the above couple are: Margaret a natural child baptized 15-6-1754. Janet born 18-1-1770, baptized 20-1-1770. William baptized 7-3-1773. In entry 1770, the father Alexander Walker is described as a miller in Craaighouse. The Old Parochial Register in Saline are in fact copy of accounts of "Marriage Money received for the use of the poor". The following entry appears therein. June 6, 1755 Given by Alexander Walker and Christian Henderson for being proclaimed in order to marriage. ...... 18 shilling. Bill - prswwg@juno.com 2 Jun 2002 20:42:14 -0400

Dear Hugh - Thanks for responding so quickly. I was born in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and am Eurasian (English, French Huguenot, Dutch, German and Sinhalese). Gasp! But the miscegenation gets worse - there are Spaniards, French Canadian/Red Indians, Serbs, Croats, Poles, Slavs - and goodness only knows what else - in my extended family. We were known as the United Nations. No known Eskimos or extra terrestrials - YET.

As regards my connection with Thomas Bowman I would point you to my website www.pillagoda.freewire.co.uk and Vol. II ("The Golden Afternoon") of my book "The Golden Falcon." If you have any trouble getting in, just type "pillagoda." This will even bring my poems "Rude Songs for Rude People" and the family portraits are on the Sri Lanka Gen Web under People and Places. URL http://www.pillagoda.freewire.co.uk/SUNSET.htm

--193 - Bowman In about 1817 Thomas Bowman or his son became partner owner of the ship Vitoria - probably named after Wellington's victory in the Spanish city of this name. Another member of the syndicate which owned this vessel was my great great grandfather George Winter, of 10, Montpelier Street, Walworth, Surrey (now south London). George was one of the first Englishmen to emigrate to Ceylon in about 1825. Thomas Bowman's nephew was Haverstock Hodsell Bowman whose son Edward Ainsworth Bowman married one of George's daughters. Their son Edward Deslandes Bowman married my 2 grandfathers' (they were brothers) sister Eveyln Gertrude - known as Sissie. The Bowmans inherited the estate George originally bought from an indigo planter named Mr Henley. This was called Baddegama Estate, near Galle & Hikkaduwa, Ceylon. My paternal grandfather Alfred William Roosmale Cocq Winter bought a part of this plantation. This was known as Pillagoda Valley Estate, belonging to A. W. Winter & Sons.  My mother's Mary Marguerite Bowman (Mrs Perry and subsequently Mrs George Butler) told me Thomas Bowman was a gamekeeper to the local laird and saw his portrait in the laird's stately home. I don't know who the laird was. Any information about any Bowman family of Crail or the local laird would be greatly appreciated. I have now found my G Grandmother, Grace Dick Reekie. I had already found her marriage certificate and, working on the info it contained, did a search at Scottish Origins. She was born in 1877 at Cooperhall, Lochgelly, Auchterderran, her father was Andew Reekie born in Auctertool in 1832, son of Andrew Reekie and Janet Fernie and who married Margaret Edwards in Saline in 1857.

If we are related then my Alexander (1832) might be related to your John (possibly a cousin?) . - I would very much like to see if any of our Reekies match up.

Date: Wed, 14 Aug 2002 - Re: John Young Hello Hugh, needs further inspection dec 2003 or sometime -

Firstly I must apologize for not replying to you in February 2002, but I can tell you that I am none the wiser now than I was then. The IGI gave me no help, so I went on to the OPRs on the Scots Origins site on the net. I could not find a birth of Thomas YOUNG to George YOUNG and Jane (Jean) URE between 1825 - 1835 in the whole of Scotland. His actual birth date is 7.7.1832. There was also no marriage record for George YOUNG and Jane URE from 1780 - 1835 in the whole of Scotland, so I thought it was a bit of a waste of time trying to do anything else at the time, especially when I had many branches of the family where there was abundant information and I could make good progress. So the Youngs were put on the backburner. I have to say the OPRs gave me piles of information on the Danks side of the family, but that doesn't help with the Youngs.

I thought without much to go on, your "mini family tree" idea might be a little difficult to construct, but I am open to suggestions, and would appreciate your ideas. I am not sure if George Young was one of the "Youngs the saddlers." His occupation on Thomas Young's marriage certificate was "labourer", and on Thomas Young's death certificate was "shepherd."

You mentioned a Don Page in Edinburgh. My married name is Don, and my husband is doing research into his family, a lot of them coming from the Edinburgh district. I am sure he would love details of the Don Page, that might be of some assistance to him in the future. -- Best wishes, Barbara .

Can you identify this entry for a marriage at Auchtrmuchty, Fife, Scotland for a James Whyte and Jean Reekie dated 4 May 1839? Film #1040149 (LDS). Daughter Jane born 1841 dying in Lake City, Minnesota USA area in 1885, her husband was James Thomson 1828-1899 in Lake City, Minnesota. Perhaps son of Jane was Henry Thomson.

Also looking for a Robert Wylie from this same area in Scotland as he was always with the Whyte/Reekie family and the Thomson/Whyte family. The Wylie's lived in same area in Lake City, Minnesota and have family burial plots together in the Lakewood Cemetery in the city of Lake City, Minnesota USA. How can I ever find Robert Wylie, born abt 1830, coming to US in 1850s and marrying in Caledonia, NY in 1859 before coming to Minnesota. He married Helen McKenzie but we know her heritage from Croy and Dalcross, Inverness, Scotland. Helen born in Scotland 1834, and christened 8 Jan 1835 and parents were Simon McKenzie and Isabella Clunas.

Hoping we could find a Robert Wylie whose children's names were Andrew, Robbie and Jennet and they were born in Lake City, MN area.

Please tell me if Abbotshall, Fife and Auchtermuchty, Fife are parishes that are close to one another????

Thanks for your time and patience. Please acknowledge that you received this information. Corrine

"Alan Bird" <Amjbird@btopenworld.com> re - Christina and Thomas Saunders/Sanders 20 Oct 2002

--Christina Sanders, artist, m a Robertson, born , Kinghorn, Fife - Alan Bird - details - QUERY 6.198

--198 ROBERTSON / SANDERS Christina Robertson, an artist, born Sanders, born Kinghorn, Fife, about 1798. She had a brother Thomas. Is it possible she is listed as having been born or lived in Linktwon. There was a Thomas Sanders born there in 1784 so it is just possible there is a connection. IGI is not herlpful. Christina ended her days in Russia painting the Imperial family and members of the aristocracy. Her prices were very, very high, but it's odd that no documents seem to exist here about her life. Hi sorry I think it is Dumbuls and it will be somewhere in Fife, I cant find in my Scottish road map but I will make enquiries - I have all of the other places marked and didn't realise I had missed that one. -- My map has most of the little villages on it so maybe it has changed its name or is only a part of a bigger city and therefore not marked. All of that information came from the Latter Day Saints put in by a man called Richard Walton Groggett who I believe died in 1956 so it is fairly old information and I dont know where he got it from - as soon as I have time I will send you complete list of what I know.

Richard Walton Groggett was a descendant of William Walton & Susan Mellville this William was a brother of my David (b Abernethy Perthshire ) and was also born in Abernethy but the rest of the children were born in Fife - Thanks - Liz

Parishes: -Cleish, Auchterderran, Ballingry, Freuchie, Kennoway, Saline, Strathmiglo, Torryburn

I believe that james Colliar was married in Auchterran or Ballingry, not sure where he was born as some say he was the illigimate son of a Welsh Tanner.

> Donna - Sorry I cannot put up info as you have submitted.
> Please identify the parish for James Collier - where he was born, or got married - just one!
